Spontaneous creation of non-zero angular momentum modes in tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate Bose gases
We investigate the dynamics of two tunnel-coupled two-dimensional degenerate
Bose gases. The reduced dimensionality of the clouds enables us to excite
specific angular momentum modes by tuning the coupling strength, thereby
creating striking patterns in the atom density profile. The extreme sensitivity
of the system to the coupling and initial phase difference results in a rich
variety of subsequent dynamics, including vortex production, complex
oscillations in relative atom number and chiral symmetry breaking due to
counter-rotation of the two clouds.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure

Interactive computer modules for undergraduate chemical engineering instruction
Interactive computer modules have been developed for four of the core courses in the Chemical Engineering curriculum: Introduction to Chemical Engineering, Fluids/Transport, Separations, and Kinetics. These modules generally consist of a review of the material, followed by an interactive problem‐solving session, which may include a computer simulation of the processes involved. The problem is often presented as part of a scenario, to capture the student's interest, and hints are available to guide the student. This study examines the components of these modules, as well as considerations that educators should take into account when developing interactive computer modules.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/106870/1/6180010103_ftp.pd
Relationship between antipyretic effects and cytokine levels in uncomplicated falciparum malaria during different treatment regimes
We have previously shown that both chloroquine and paracetamol (acetaminophen) have antipyretic activity during treatment of acute uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children 1-4 years old. Here, we studied if this effect was accompanied by changes in plasma cytokine levels. The 104 children were treated with either chloroquine or sulfadoxine/pyrimethamine (SP) alone, SP + chloroquine or SP + paracetamol for 4 days. Cytokine levels were determined days 0, 2 and 3, body temperature every sixth hour until 72 h and parasitemia once daily for 4 days. At admission, body temperature correlated with levels of IL-10, IFN-γ and IL-6, and parasitemia correlated with IL-10 and IL-6. Except for TNF-α and IL-1β, where no significant effect was found, all cytokine levels (IL-10, IFN-γ, IL-6, IL-12, IL-13, IL-18 and IL-4) decreased up to day 2 (p \u3c 0.05). IL-6 levels continued to fall from days 2 to 3 (p \u3c 0.05), whereas increased levels were found for several cytokines (IL-12, IL-13, IL-18 and IL-1β) (p \u3c 0.05). The antipyretic effects of chloroquine and paracetamol could not be related to any specific changes in the evaluated cytokine production or in Th1/Th2 or inflammatory/anti-inflammatory cytokine ratios. Alternative mechanisms for antipyretic effects and associations between fever and cytokine levels during uncomplicated P. falciparum malaria are therefore discussed. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Discovery of pulsations, including possible pressure modes, in two new extremely low mass, He-core white dwarfs
We report the discovery of the second and third pulsating extremely low mass
white dwarfs (WDs), SDSS J111215.82+111745.0 (hereafter J1112) and SDSS
J151826.68+065813.2 (hereafter J1518). Both have masses < 0.25 Msun and
effective temperatures below 10,000 K, establishing these putatively He-core
WDs as a cooler class of pulsating hydrogen-atmosphere WDs (DAVs, or ZZ Ceti
stars). The short-period pulsations evidenced in the light curve of J1112 may
also represent the first observation of acoustic (p-mode) pulsations in any WD,
which provide an exciting opportunity to probe this WD in a complimentary way
compared to the long-period g-modes also present. J1112 is a Teff = 9590 +/-
140 K and log(g) = 6.36 +/- 0.06 WD. The star displays sinusoidal variability
at five distinct periodicities between 1792-2855 s. In this star we also see
short-period variability, strongest at 134.3 s, well short of expected g-modes
for such a low-mass WD. The other new pulsating WD, J1518, is a Teff = 9900 +/-
140 K and log(g) = 6.80 +/- 0.05 WD. The light curve of J1518 is highly
non-sinusoidal, with at least seven significant periods between 1335-3848 s.
Consistent with the expectation that ELM WDs must be formed in binaries, these
two new pulsating He-core WDs, in addition to the prototype SDSS
J184037.78+642312.3, have close companions. However, the observed variability
is inconsistent with tidally induced pulsations and is so far best explained by
the same hydrogen partial-ionization driving mechanism at work in classic
C/O-core ZZ Ceti stars.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted to The Astrophysical Journa
Willingness and ability to pay for artemisinin-based combination therapy in rural Tanzania
The aim of this study was to analyse willingness to pay (WTP) and ability to pay (ATP) for ACT for children below five years of age in a rural setting in Tanzania before the introduction of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) as first-line treatment for uncomplicated malaria. Socio-economic factors associated with WTP and expectations on anti-malaria drugs, including ACT, were also explored. Structured interviews and focus group discussions were held with mothers, household heads, health-care workers and village leaders in Ishozi, Gera and Ishunju wards in north-west Tanzania in 2004. Contingent valuation method (CVM) was used with "take-it-or-leave-it" as the eliciting method, expressed as WTP for a full course of ACT for a child and households' opportunity cost of ACT was used to assess ATP. The study included descriptive analyses with multivariate adjustment for potential confounding factors. Among 265 mothers and household heads, 244 (92%, CI = 88%-95%) were willing to pay Tanzanian Shillings (TSh) 500 (US 6.0, which would represent 0.9% of the average total consumption expenditures as estimated from official data in 2001. The cost of non-subsidized ACT represented 7.0% of reported total annual expenditure on food and 33.0% of total annual expenditure on health care."Rapid effect," "no adverse effect" and "inexpensive" were the most desired features of an anti-malarial drug. WTP for ACT in this study was less than its real cost and a subsidy is, therefore, needed to enable its equitable affordability. The decision taken in Tanzania to subsidize Coartem fully at governmental health care facilities and at a consumer price of TSh 300-500 (US$ 0.28-0.46) at special designated shops through the programme of Accredited Drug Dispensing Outlets (ADDOs) appears to be well founded

Suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy: a survey of use, knowledge and attitudes of anaesthetists
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisher © Australian Society of AnaesthetistsClinical hypnosis is a skill of using words and gestures (frequently called suggestions) in particular ways to achieve specific outcomes. It is being increasingly recognised as a useful intervention for managing a range of symptoms, especially pain and anxiety. We surveyed all 317 South Australian Fellows and trainees registered with ANZCA to determine their use, knowledge of, and attitudes towards positive suggestion, hypnosis and hypnotherapy in their anaesthesia practice. The response rate was 218 anaesthetists (69%). The majority of respondents (63%) rated their level of knowledge on this topic as below average. Forty-eight per cent of respondents indicated that there was a role for hypnotherapy in clinical anaesthesia, particularly in areas seen as traditional targets for the modality, i.e. pain and anxiety states. Nearly half of the anaesthetists supported the use of hypnotherapy and positive suggestions within clinical anaesthesia. Those respondents who had experience of clinical hypnotherapy were more likely to support hypnosis teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level when compared with those with no experience.http://www.aaic.net.au/Article.asp?D=200408
